About

I started coaching in 2008. I was still competing at a high level at this point, taking part in races such as the FBD Insurance Rás (as it was known then) and numerous national time trial championships, where I finished in the top 10 on four occasions. I was handy, but not quite top tier!

Coaching allows me to use that experience, combining it with applied scientific knowledge and an ability to relate it all to the individual. I love unlocking performance in athletes.

An evidence-based approach

An evidence-based approach

A first class honours degree in Sport Science gives me a good grasp of the key determinants of cycling performance. I have also attended many seminars, courses and conferences, including Training Peaks University and The Science and Application of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). All of my training guidance is an accumulation of many years of formal study, as well as applied experience with athletes.

The ability to relate

The ability to relate

Training plans really come alive when I’m able to teach the hows and whys of specific sessions and adaptations. How does riding slowly make you go faster? What changes do those awful sprint efforts bring about? Why is my heart rate higher when it’s warm? The more you know about your training, the more engaged you’ll be with the process.

I also really get to know you, the person. It’s you that does the training and the events, so knowing you is important – your lifestyle, how your training fits around it, your goals and ambitions, your strengths, weaknesses – all of it!

I will never guarantee improvements or specific results. What I do guarantee is that everything I provide is aimed at making you faster. The overwhelming majority of athletes I’ve worked with over the years have made significant progress, and I’ve coached national champions in multiple disciplines across various age groups.

I’d love to discuss how we could make you a better cyclist – please do get in touch if you’d like to as well.
